I told you so what to do Mortal Kombat season 2 do you think your phone this is not the case what happens from time to time but you Jordans never if we don't learn by doing this is adolescence kazoo cover making just do it now let us do it homework as a seventh grade I think I've been through enough years of school to tell you that homework is not the most enjoyable part of school some students will tell you that they hate him next every single drop of it some will tell you that they could have spent that time playing video games someone tell you that they could have spent that time texting friends but I'm almost certain that every single parent in this room would disagree with me many parents think that homework is an essential part of learning about without homework learning is not possible Educators also have a similar view on this matter Educators view homework as what is a Fail-Safe if a student doesn't do well in school that day homework is there to help them and to help them improve though this may be true in a period of time in the long run the results of homework or not consistent take a look at it this way if homework actually Reedus better our school should be the best in the world we should be releasing thousands of educated men and women who travel the world and help other people three issues is homework actually made us better there shouldn't be a single third world country in the whole world but as many of you know homework does not make us better you don't have the best schools in the world is held by different country and you know what's special about Finland schools they don't have homework no I'm not saying that homework is not beneficial I mean it does teach you something sometimes but YouTube little academic improvements we're sacrificing much much more any pediatrician will tell you that a child needs more than 9 hours of sleep every single day but unfortunately homework intervenes student spends 7 to 8 ish hours of his or her day going to school itself more over a child has 30 minutes of homework from every class on average that's another two to three more lowers including extracurricular activities and just having fun this is clearly not sufficient sleep for our students our students are not our students are simply not getting enough sleep when you think of a school you would think that they put the edge shin and the safety of students first but this is clearly not seen when it comes to homework by implementing homework we're actually affecting us can you set the lady to learn contrary to what most people think by installing homework in our school system we're actually affecting a student's a closer look at this issue hints at something much more disastrous homework and shrubs a friendly relationship between Perrin child now I'm sure that every parent in this room wants a happy family where a child gets enough time to play We're chill you get enough time to eat 3 meals in a day but once again homework intervenes this time in what seems like a natural connection I'm sure many of you understand this situation you calling come on it's time for dinner and your son or daughter's at calling back coming Dad I'm almost done I have one more minute left and coming 2 hours later or the more aggressive response of mom can't you see I'm doing Mort cheese this angers both sides of the conflict the parents because they want a happy family they want a family amazing and children because of the frustration and the annoyance in this way homework is kind of like chaos theory I'm sure many of you know that I'm sure many of you have famously heard that a beat of a butterflies could cause a storm on the other side of the world to a different situation I mean none of you here would trade a $10 bill for a but this is exactly what we are doing with homework once again homework has proven itself to be inefficient silver if you still think that homework is an important part of school homework really doesn't have a major effect on the engine can have children just because you give a child a worksheet and tell him or her to complete it tell him or her to finish every single math problem does it mean he or she actually understands the material you see this is where teachers should come in a teacher who just hands worksheets just doesn't give out tangible advice and just plays on a mobile device all day is no better than homework itself but to reach the school we must require a change in the way our teachers participate in the education of students if we can have personalized personalized medicine all the way to personalize recommended for you bars on YouTube what we have personalized education teachers are here to teach I mean that's why we have them at each given teachers in this educationally gifted school don't give out advice a student can stick onto and build upon even teachers in this school are the best teacher is a student could have this is where is our first step in reaching a better school system moreover we straightforwardly tell students that they are doing sing wrong but we never tell them why they are failing we never tell them what they are failing at this is this is another step in reaching a better school system moreover we have been assigning homework the same way since the 1900s as Einstein once said the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting results the 100 years may not seem like a lot take into consideration that our school system that our world event has evolved rapidly these last 20 years Punky computers of the 80s have evolved into slim devices that can fit in our hands the unwieldy carts of the 1800s heavy loads into the supercars of today primitive medicine such as bloodletting in the Medieval ages has evolved into groundbreaking cancer fighting techniques of today but homework has remained more or less unchanged I mean if I was doing something wrong I'd know about it I would work to fix it and I would work to be better at it but the richest school system world still clings onto it's almost primitive ways you see the school systems of Finland Denmark in Singapore are some of the best in the world but our country the richest country in the world is lagging behind its National counterparts wear according to a National survey the government spends a little more than $12,000 $12,000 per student Finland students feed and academics all the government spends 24% less we repeatedly told them that they're not good enough we repeatedly tell them that they're failing repeatedly to them that they're not good and that they should improve this all ends up being not beneficial unfortunately we can never become Finland or can we their school system is the exact opposite of ours they don't have homework or standardized tests put the absence of homework can be clearly seen in Finland schools a shorter school day let students pursue their dreams let students good friends and have friendly and make good family interactions a 15 minute break between every class students interpret and understand what they just learned no homework lets students socialize with their friends and make better teacher she did interactions but the results of a homework free environment can be is more evident in the future of the students live better teacher to student interaction leads to higher success rates poverty is literally unknown to the people of Finland everyone is offered an opportunity everyone is offered an opportunity to succeed in life more time for sleep let's these adults develop good habits in their job and in their lives moreover the absence of standardized plays a major part in the whole of the students lives Studies have shown that these students are the happiest students in the world they have a virtual stress free life we know that homework will not work we know that homework is not in a fish way of teaching our students but we still implemented UC what if I told you that homework is the root cause of big issues in our country such as drug use and high school dropouts if you was really think about it all these crimes all are all these problems are caused by a failure in school take a look into the mind of a student who's struggling in Middle School every day he forgets to do homework because he was not able to do it because of family issues or even just because they forgot he goes to school feeling that he's stupid that he's a failure but he can't do anything moreover the constant strings of zeros that he gets from every failed assignments make some even makes him feel even more bad eventually he may drop out and what do you think High School dropouts do but wait let's take a closer look at this child imagine if homework didn't exist every day for the would be a new start everyday would be a blank slate everyday would be a new opportunity to restart and yes all the failures of yesterday imagine a student that doesn't have any homework imagine is that doesn't have any major stresses in his or her life that soon is more likely to succeed put this change will not happen overnight it's not like one day all teachers just suddenly decided can you stop giving out homework to every single student the change will take a gradual movement but there is one thing we a citizens must do to get there this change requires a change in the mindset of our people people don't allow themselves to analyze their mistakes many people don't allow themselves to understand other people's ideas and this is exactly what we should it be doing many people think that our country is already perfect and that we need no reform many people think that we're old play the best country in the world and that our schools are already amazing that they're phenomenal but this just reinforces the fact that we're not willing to understand other people's ideas now after all this talk about I have a homework assignment for go to a library book store or even online and look up the controversy about homework there are many titles on the subject but why you're eating remember to keep an open mind remember to truly understand what these people are saying read and maybe you'll form a new opinion thank you what makes to wake up and get out of bed every morning really what motivates you to get on your feet put on your clothes and search least I hope you all brush your teeth and go out and do whatever you need to do for today maybe it's your alarm clock maybe it's the birds chirping outside maybe it's the sunshine resting on your eyes maybe it's the parent barging into your room and yelling at you in kill the pain is unbearable no I look at this question and look at my life and there are some days in which I want to wake up I personally just want to just stay in bed Turn Around plant my face into my pillow and hopefully get hack into my dream or nightmare so but then the other days where I noticed I'm right on my feet I'm recently ready to go for the day now I look back and say well I probably had more sleep one of those but this happens very often and I go to sleep play at the same time every single day and the birds weren't tripping any louder the sun wasn't shining any brighter and my alarm clock doesn't have a mind of its own the only difference was is that one day I wanted to and one day I didn't so what is whole deal with motivation anyway it seems as if we as children don't like to be told what to do the only problem is that when we're not told what to do we do nothing at all and I'm sure many parents can relate to this I mean look at it simple tasks such a doing the laundry or washing the dishes tasks that would only take them about five minutes to get done they complain and whine and say oh that's too but I don't want to so I was curious about this so I went on the internet and did a little research and then I hit the Big Top intrinsic and extrinsic motivation engines in meaning you're doing something because you want to because you loved it because you're passionate about it extrinsic you're doing it because something that you want such as a prize or money so let's go back and look at the Revolutionary War from a perspective you would say alright England bigger Army more well-funded in a country for a long time colonists you're screwed but we all know how that war ended and the real difference between the two armies in it was the key difference that was the changing Factor was that the England Army was fighting for money because those were canaries but for the calling the state couldn't afford to pay the people so instead all of their army comprised of was people sing it because they wanted to is because they wanted a better future for the Next Generation they were fighting for something bigger than them and that was freedom but don't take my word for it take a look at and read Sun Tzu and the Art of warfare he could predict the outcome of any War just spend looking at the factors how many often it wasn't because of the numbers it was because of what they were fighting for and why so now assuming that you're all still with we can all agree that intrinsic motivation seats better results than extrinsic so now the real question is how do we please wear harness intrinsic motivation so let's take a look at Edward DC man who made the self-determination and you're right the story about a girl and what happened was she loves playing the violin who is Passion about it she played it every single day and she loved it she would pick the hardest piece out of her book and practice it and remastered one day her violin teacher said hey if you play this amount of hours every day I'll give you a little Ward and what do you think happened she got worse because no longer was she doing cuz she loved it she was just love she was just playing because she wanted to get time in cuz she wanted the reward she was choosing the easiest pieces and playing them over and over again so the first thing that we can do is first of all don't introduce extrinsic motivation from the beginning because that just takes away with the child truly loves if you see doing something and they start to fade away from it don't get too disappointed and don't force it on to them because then it becomes a chore and then they say oh well great now I have to force I'm just being forced to do the one thing that I was actually happy to do and no longer are they interested should I put the first thing you can do is don't introduce a system of reward that them love it for example in my life whenever my mom leave house she says Dexter please play the piano while I'm gone she'll go for about 1 hour and sometimes I do sometimes I don't where's that I do she'll come back and say so did you play your piano and I said yes Mom and she says no I don't believe you I say what no Mom what did Jesus know that can't be possible but Mom look this is not the point here the point that I'm trying to hey is that it's not that I know it's that you know you should be happy and living your life knowing that you play the piano you shouldn't be doing how to satisfy me but to satisfy yourself wise woman so now taking a general stance at will because that's just the most prominent place in which we can see curiosity just blooming baby is are constantly reaching around putting things in their mouths you may no wait don't do that but they don't care they want to explore they always have this yearning to find out new things this endless curiosity as we grow up this goes away now at first I thought that this was a simple sign of maturation and as we grow this naturally happens but there are adults and teenagers today that are passionate about what they want to do so that can't be it the real problem is that they were already introduced extrinsic motivation the problem now is how do we fix that the toothpaste is already out of the bottle you've already tried extrinsic motivation it's not working she got to try something new you can't retry the same thing over and over again so here is what you can do personally to all parent sign your child up for extracurricular activities just as many as possible now don't just say surprise I signed you up for 10 summer school classes by the summer school classes points of them all and say Alright you're going to have to do one of these choose the one that you want to do expose them to all of these options but do not force them into it because you don't want to make them hate with their they could possibly love you want to get them exposed to as many options as possible but if they don't choose to continue don't be disappointed because that's the natural so long as they have the experience it's in their head that is all that matters so looking at an intrinsic versus extrinsic result the real thing is that extrinsic on result is not talking about the pathway to achieve what you want it's just like money the issue with this is that if we looked at life always at the end assault achievement all for example I filled to a child and he says oh my gosh at the end of our life or just going to die anyway no point to do anything the whole meaning of life is gone we should just not do anything and sit at home I just look at them saying all I did was ask you if you did your math homework so now we can move on to the whole issue of discipline because really there are things in life that you're going to have to do whether you like it or not so one of the things that you may or may how to do is homework okay so I took a survey of my teachers and ask them so how do you personally motivate your children to do and I say well there's a gold stars there's a little Jolly Rancher you can give them all of extrinsic motivation however they all admitted that these things don't always work but what they all had in common was an engine Zig motivation they said that student had to be self motivated to do it because teachers need May encourage it but the students must be wanting to do it so now I ASL teachers what is your buy-in or how do you introduce the class to your students because really can you walk into a classroom say open up your textbook to page so and so and so and so and then sit down there are going to be in the Westerner most often going to fool around now before you all go home just draw a bunch of posters and come to school Pro sing teachers it's all your fault what have you done to her students this is tragic their failing or we're doing so bad in education why no please don't do that I'm just saying that teachers you can help they can encourage your students but students you all can't reject all of this when your teacher finally being open-minded and trying to make the lesson fun don't just say they are here she goes again trying to be more open-minded in except this help so I mentioned how in life we're going to have to do things that we want want to do and that's just the fact of life but I also you to all find something that you're passionate about so the real question is now how do you find joy in something that you have to do and here's just one little example and that's what my mom tells me go do the laundry and I go over I separate my darks from my lights in the washer put them in the dryer alternate and then I go to the couch and I fold them all and looking out at all the clean clothes laying beautifully on couch I think I got clean underwear for tomorrow and that feels great and it may be just a minor thing give me this feeling of accomplishment and to top it off my parents weren't mad so my day was already 10000 times better than it usually is here is the real benefit from NSYNC motivation the thing that you can't achieve without doing anything else and that's through hard work the sense of dignity pride and achievement you can't get this through handouts you can only achieve this through really working hard on and when we do things like this Robert Henry describes this as more than ordinary moments of existence because if there are many feelings that can be achieved many ways such as happiness people may say money doesn't bring you happiness but if I were to play just get a Bugatti I'd be pretty happy with that Bugatti but there's only one way to achievement because you want to look back at your day not syncing well I sat 8 hours in front of the television didn't finish my homework and my parents hate me That's not healthy you want to look back at your day saying well I have great grades all of my homework or done my parents are actually satisfied with what done and I feel great about that and really that's what we should all be aiming for the feeling of satisfaction this out of that you're living a life that you want so I want everyone to at least take something away from this to all pictures try to make introduce your lesson great to your students I understand if you may be having a long day or a frustrating could always try to make the lesson interesting 12 parents if you see your child doing something they absolutely love in your proud of that but sometimes you feel play they're sleeping away just mentioned to that to them and say you know I've noticed that your kind of lacking in this but never force them back into it because that robs them of what they pause and if you've already use an extrinsic motivation then it's time to try something new sign them up for any extracurricular activities possible to that if exposed to these experiences and finally to all the students out there next time your parent comes up and says hey what do you want to sign up for or your teacher is making the class encouraging don't just block them out don't say no no no I don't want this mom please stop you need to be open mine except that they're trying to help you out so that you can finally find something that you're passionate about and you can go throughout your life loving what you've done thank you
