About Mrs. Moffat
I grew up in San Marino and attended Carver, Huntington, and San Marino High School! I received my undergraduate degree in English literature from U.C. Berkeley (Go Bears!) and have two Master's degrees in Education -- one for Special Education (mild/moderate disabilities through giftedness) and the other for Grades K-8 Teaching. I have been married for over 30 years, raising my three children in San Marino. My husband and I are now empty-nesters living in Pasadena!
Before becoming a full-time teacher, I was an educational therapist, the Director of Alumni Relations at Polytechnic School where I also taught high school electives, and the Communications Director for a lobbying group in downtown Los Angeles.
I started teaching in San Marino in 2009, first as a long-term substitute for 6th and 8th grades. I then spent a year teaching 4th grade at Carver before landing in my present 6th grade position. I absolutely LOVE teaching 6th grade! In 2018, I received Huntington PTA's Halo Award for "going above and beyond" for my students. I feel blessed to be working in a job I love with such terrific students, supportive parents, and friendly and dedicated colleagues!
Teaching Goals and Philosophy:
- to develop confident, enthusiastic, life-long learners who become more comfortable taking risks and accepting challenges
- to champion all students by presenting lessons in multiple modalities to support various learning styles
- to teach "life skills" such as self-advocacy, responsibility, time management, organizational, and critical-thinking skills to help all students reach their potential
- to foster curiosity and a growth mindset to nourish a fulfilling school (and life) experience
