Locker Changes & Student Expectations
Why did the school remove hallway lockers?
In consultation with the executive team and San Marino Unified School Board, we have decided to remove student hallway lockers at HMS. This change is intended to create a safer and more organized learning environment. As we continue to evaluate how our campus spaces are used, hallway lockers will no longer be necessary for storing school materials. Removing the lockers also allows us to better utilize campus space, improve supervision, and simplify students' daily routines while supporting a focused learning environment.
Will this create more congestion in classrooms?
Teachers will establish classroom procedures for storing backpacks safely so that aisles, exits, and learning spaces remain organized and accessible.
Will students be allowed to bring backpacks to class?
Yes. Generally, students may bring their backpacks with them throughout the school day and keep them in their classrooms. Some classrooms will have other accommodations based on student needs. For example, 6th grade teachers will have hooks available for students to use outside of classrooms.
Where will students keep their books and school supplies?
Students will store their materials in their backpacks and keep them with them during the school day. Teachers will continue to provide guidance on organizing materials so students can easily access what they need.
What about students who have heavy backpacks?
Teachers are mindful of the materials students need each day and will minimize the number of items students need to carry. Students are also encouraged to carefully consider the materials they are bringing with them to school and should regularly clean out their backpacks. We will ensure teachers have access to classroom sets of instructional materials and/or digital textbooks that are already utilized by the majority of our teachers.
What about band and orchestra students?
Students enrolled in band or orchestra may drop off their instruments in the music room from 8:00 to 8:10 AM and retrieve them after school. Students will not be expected to carry instruments throughout the school day.
What about students participating in after-school sports?
Students in 7th and 8th grade participating in after-school athletics may drop off sports equipment in the gym between 8:00 and 8:10 AM and pick it up after school before practices or games.
For 6th grade students participating in athletics, coaches will provide instructions at the beginning of each season regarding where sports equipment should be stored during the school day so students do not need to carry it with them.
Will students still have PE lockers?
Seventh and eighth grade students will continue to use PE lockers during their PE class period to securely store their clothing and personal belongings. Sixth grade students do not dress for PE and therefore do not require PE lockers.
Where should students keep valuables?
Students should not bring valuables to Huntington Middle School. Items such as expensive electronics, large amounts of money, jewelry, or other personal valuables should be left at home. If students choose to bring personal items to school, they are responsible for keeping track of them at all times. Huntington Middle School is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged personal items.
How does this impact the school's cell phone policy?
To support student learning, engagement, and well-being, students may not use cell phones or other personal communication devices (smart watches, etc.) during the school day from 8:00 AM to 2:50 PM. This expectation includes before school, passing periods, snack, lunch, and class time. Devices should be turned off and kept in backpacks at all times. Families who need to reach their child during the school day should contact the school office.
Are roller backpacks allowed as an alternative for carrying materials?
Roller backpacks are not permitted at Huntington Middle School due to safety concerns. Families with questions about accommodations should contact the school administration so we can work together to support their student’s needs.
