We had a great class party today!
Thank you to all who contributed to our buffet in some way.
It was delicious, and a great way to celebrate the end
of the year with our classroom community.

Tomorrow is Spirit Day!
For my Homeroom students: Spirit Day t-shirts will be passed out
in the morning. If you are wearing anything special
for our Spirit Day Dance, just wear it to school, and
then you can get your t-shirt afterwards (before we start
moving around to the different activities). Remember that
lunch will be provided and dismissal will be at 12:30.

Lockers should be cleaned out by now. Students will not need
any materials at school, except pens for signing yearbooks on Thursday.

Please keep an eye out for anything
that belongs to Room 309 - books from my classroom library,
colored pencils, highlighters, sharpies, etc. I would
love to retrieve missing items! Students get a Jolly Rancher
for every item they are able to round up.

Homework: If not already turned in, the Rome packet and
parent signature for the  "Summer Suggestions"
letter should be turned in as soon as possible.

Happy Holidays!
Hope you are enjoying a little rest and relaxation, and some festive fun as well!

In case you would like to get a "head start" on a few things, here are some upcoming assignments for 2016.

  • IXL - the next few Skills Lessons will not be due until January 10, but students may start working on them whenever they have a moment. They are:
Z.1, Z.2, ZZ.1, ZZ.2, BBB.1.
  • Biography/Autobiography Book Report - students can e-mail me if they have a book they would like to have approved. Reading does not need to be completed until the end of January, but sometimes vacation time is a great time for reading!
  • Achieve 3000 - there are a few articles available for students to access if they would like to spend a little extra time practicing reading skills. These will not be assignments, but just interesting supplemental activities. The subjects of the articles are related to what we will be studying in 2016.

FYI - I am working on organizing our class photos and will try to post them soon. We have some great ones from Halloween, our field trip to the Getty Villa, skits on daily life in Ancient Egypt, and the Holiday Party. Hopefully soon!

Dear Parents and Students,
Thank you so much for contributing to our class holiday party.
It was so fun to celebrate together and remember all that we

The Secret Elf gift exchange was a highlight, and the gratitude expressed
by each student was so heartwarming.
Best wishes for a healthy and happy holiday season!

Note-taking for Egypt Research Report -

(please use these guidelines):

  1. Preview the source before you choose to use it – is there enough information on your subtopics to make it worthwhile?

  1. Once a source is chosen, record as much bibliographic information as possible at the top of a note-taking sheet, especially the URL!

  1. Use one note-taking sheet at a time, for one source at a time. Write the headings for your subtopics at the top of each of the 4 columns.

  1. Record as much information as you can on all four subtopics, using one source at a time, on the note-taking sheet.

  1. Remember to paraphrase!

READ: Read the fact.

STOP: What are the important words?

THINK: How can I say it differently?

TELL: Tell the fact in your own words.

  1. Notes should be in words and phrases, not complete sentences.

  1. If you want to include a direct quote, write it in your notes word for word and include quotation marks around it.

If you have any questions about the program, please address them to the administration. If you would like to preview the movie, please click on the following link and watch the clip entitled TeenBiz:

Assignment

We have had a great first two days of school! I'm looking forward to seeing parents at Back to School Night on Wednesday night. At that time, I'll be able to share information about what we have been covering in class as we establish procedures and go over expectations. Students may feel a bit overwhelmed with all this new information, but they should feel reassured that we will review all the procedures several times during the next few weeks. I hope they feel comfortable about coming to me if they have questions or concerns. My goal is for them to feel safe and comfortable, and enjoy the first few weeks of school!
