Bewildering Hike
By Laura Lee

“Wow! I’m glad I went on this trip!” I thought in my head, as I lay down on the tall dried up grass.  This experience happened a few days later on our school trip in Catalina. It was past dinner, and everyone was reading through what he or she was going to do for the rest of the afternoon.  Unfortunately, I was with none of my friends except for a few people who I occasionally chat to.  After the lunch break, we would all meet next to the red totem pole near the boats.

Two counselors dressed in funky clothes with a water floater around each of them approached us students waiting next to the totem pole. Everyone had puzzled looks upon their faces, wondering why in the world they were dressed like that, or at least that was what I had thought. “Let’s go you guys!” They exclaimed with gleams in their eyes. We all followed them into an area where we played a game to hike up.  The game’s rules were we had to close our eyes and then hold the person’s shoulder in front of you. The leader though would have his/her eyes opened to guide us. We would all switch and take turns being the leader. I was in the back of the line, and it was problematic. When going up the hill, there was tall grass brushing our legs, cactus on the side, so we would have to be careful, and a few tree branches and bushes hanging over us. Since I was last, I didn’t have a turn to be the leader, because by the time it would be my turn, everyone would be already at the top. With my eyes closed the whole time, I frequently bumped into tree branches and the grass on the ground scratched my skin lightly so there would be a faint white line on my skin. At long last, we all made it to the top of the hill.

I couldn’t believe what I saw! The scenery had a nice rainbow sunset with absolutely no clouds ruining it, and the city below was sparkling with lights that looked like diamonds in the sun. The counselors told us to find a seat and just enjoy the scenery for a few minutes. I was disappointed that I had left my camera at home, however the view was so amazing, I knew I wouldn’t ever forget this. Afterwards, the counselor gathered us in a circle, and we played mafia. One game passed, and it was pitch black. Everyone walked down with their flashlights and went back to their cabins. My adventure ended here until the next day…
